In March of this year, he was finally back running, although the problems weren't gone. Arriving at a training camp in South Africa, he complained of pains in his legs, and was discovered to have blood clots.
"My mum always says it is character building but it is long past that now," he says. "It is merely been a really stressful time. It's like someone then twisting the knife and putting it in. My mum was left thinking, 'When will it all end?'"
Greene has determined to let the question of the first procedure that was botched lie rather than pursue it farther. As Greene says, "It's not likely to make me feel any better. Occasionally you have successes in surgery and occasionally not."
But no running has meant no wins and therefore a reduction in prize-money as well as patrons. His Nike contract has several clauses while his current deal with Red Bull is drawing to a close, according to functionality. It's led sometimes not to place his house up available.
"There's enormous consequences on my life," he adds. "Sometimes not can't afford to stay in that house now. It is frustrating as everything was going nicely, and it was not huge sums of money but I have to be realistic and look ahead. I have to be realistic and seem six or seven months ahead before I get in a sticky position."
Greene arrived in Glasgow on Friday, attending the second night of the swimming as a welcome. Prior to that, he's been an honorary member based at their holding camp with his coach, Malcolm Arnold.
The fact the 28-year-old will even be on the start line for the heats of the 400m hurdles on Wednesday - true not in the shape he would like to be - is a feel-good story for a Wales Commonwealth Games team bedevilled by failed drugs tests and sportsmen pulling out with harm.nike wmns blazer low women classic pink.
A few months past he believed he'd no chance and he understands he could have turned his back on the season entirely but that is not his modus operandi. "Greene'm not likely to sit at home and watch folks run," he says. "This is precisely what I know. I'm truly enjoying being back running and being healthy."
